Ingredients
  

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 4 pieces burger buns
  • 4 slices cheddar or American cheese (optional)
  • as needed butter or oil for toasting buns
  • as needed lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, condiments

Instructions
 

  • Preheat grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly oil the grates or pan.
  • In a bowl, gently mix ground beef with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Do not overmix.
  • Divide beef into 4 equal portions and shape into patties about 3/4-inch thick. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty to prevent puffing.
  • Grill or sear patties for about 3–4 minutes per side, or until they reach an internal temperature of 160°F for medium-well.
  • Add cheese during the last minute of cooking, if using, and cover to melt.
  • Toast burger buns with a little butter or oil until golden.
  • Assemble burgers with your favorite toppings and condiments. Serve immediately.
