Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour (spoon & level)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon fine salt
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips, plus extra for topping (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment or silicone mats.
  • In a large bowl, cream softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, 2–3 minutes. Scrape the bowl.
  • Beat in eggs one at a time until smooth, then mix in vanilla.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, and salt. Add dry ingredients to wet and mix on low just until no dry streaks remain (do not overmix).
  • Fold in chocolate chips until evenly distributed.
  • Scoop dough into 1½-tablespoon balls and place 2 inches apart on prepared sheets. Press a few extra chips on top for a bakery look, if desired.
  • Bake 9–11 minutes, until edges are lightly golden and centers still look slightly soft.
  • Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack. Repeat with remaining dough.
  • Store airtight at room temperature up to 5 days, or freeze dough balls to bake later (add 1–2 minutes to bake time from frozen).
