Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter (divided)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 medium apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 8 slices French bread, brioche, or challah (thick-cut)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Prepare the Caramel Apple Topping: In a large skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar until dissolved.
  • Add the apple slices, cinnamon, and nutmeg to the skillet. Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and the sauce is bubbly. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Make the French Toast Mixture: In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until smooth.
  • Soak the Bread: Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring it’s fully coated but not overly saturated.
  • Cook the French Toast: Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Melt a small amount of butter in the pan. Cook the soaked bread slices for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
  • Assemble and Serve: Plate the French toast and top with the caramel apple mixture. Drizzle with additional caramel sauce, if desired. Serve immediately.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat individual portions in a skillet over low heat or in the microwave for 1–2 minutes. Freeze slices of French toast (without toppings) for up to 2 months; reheat from frozen in a toaster or oven.
