Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk (or milk of choice)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (optional, for extra creaminess)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (enhances flavor)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ounces semisweet or dark chocolate, finely chopped (optional, for richer flavor)

Instructions

  • In a saucepan over medium heat, warm the milk and heavy cream (if using) until hot but not boiling. Stir occasionally to prevent scorching.
  • Add the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt to the saucepan. Whisk continuously until the mixture is smooth and the sugar has dissolved.
  • If using chopped chocolate, stir it into the mixture and continue whisking until fully melted and creamy.
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Pour the hot chocolate into mugs and serve immediately.
  • Optional: Top with whipped cream, marshmallows, chocolate shavings, or a dusting of cinnamon for an indulgent treat!
