Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher), finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar adjust to taste
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch or potato starch
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream optional, for extra creaminess
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract optional
  • whipped cream for topping
  • shaved chocolate for topping
  • cocoa powder for dusting

Instructions
 

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and cornstarch until well combined.
  • In a medium saucepan, heat the whole milk (and heavy cream, if using) over medium heat until warm, but not boiling.
  • Gradually whisk in the dry mixture, ensuring no lumps form.
  • Add the chopped dark chocolate to the saucepan, stirring constantly until it melts and the mixture is smooth.
  • Reduce heat to low and simmer for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently, until it thickens to your desired consistency.
  • If desired, stir in vanilla extract for extra flavor.
  • Pour the thick hot chocolate into mugs, and top with whipped cream, shaved chocolate, or any garnish you prefer.
