Ingredients

  • 1.5 pounds ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • 0.5 cup barbecue sauce, plus extra for brushing
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 4 pieces burger buns
  • as needed lettuce leaves
  • 4 slices tomato
  • as needed pickles
  • as needed red onion slices
  • as needed mayonnaise
  • as needed mustard

Instructions

  • Preheat your grill to medium-high heat, about 400°F (200°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, gently combine the ground beef with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and 1/4 cup of barbecue sauce. Mix lightly to combine.
  • Divide the beef mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a patty about 3/4 inch thick. Press a shallow indentation into the center of each patty to prevent puffing during cooking.
  • Place the patties on the hot grill and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they reach your preferred doneness. Use a meat thermometer to check for 160°F (71°C) if desired.
  • During the last 1-2 minutes of cooking, brush the remaining barbecue sauce over each patty and place a slice of cheddar cheese on top. Close the grill lid to allow the cheese to melt.
  • While the patties finish, toast the burger buns cut-side down on the grill for 30-60 seconds until lightly browned and crisp.
  • Assemble the burgers by layering lettuce, tomato slices, the grilled patty with melted cheese, red onion slices, pickles, and your choice of mayonnaise and mustard on the toasted buns.
  • Serve immediately with extra BBQ sauce and your favorite sides such as coleslaw, potato wedges, or grilled corn.
